Oil Seals: How to Select by Shaft, Speed and Medium

Oil Seals: How to Select by Shaft, Speed and Medium

Article

A radial oil seal runs its lip on the shaft. One wrong dimension means a leak or rapid wear. Start with three fits: shaft, housing bore and width.

Shaft: use the working diameter at the lip, not a flat or a thread. Surface roughness and hardness matter as much as the compound. Axial scores cut the lip.

Housing: outside diameter and fit type decide whether the seal spins in the bore — a common complaint on vibrating pumps.

Lip and spring: a garter spring keeps contact at high speed. Dust lips are added where contamination is high.

Speed and run-out: at 3000–5000 rpm geometry and lubrication dominate. Cheap NBR with poor concentricity burns even in oil.

Medium: oil and fuel — NBR; hotter oil — FKM/Viton; water — EPDM (not in mineral oil). Food lines — silicone with batch documents if required.

A part number helps if it is still readable. If not, we measure ID, OD, height, lip type, dust lip and spring.

We manufacture oil seals from sample or drawing in Tashkent. Standard lead time is 3–5 business days after size and compound approval.
