Rubber Cords: Cross-Section, Hardness and Where They Are Used

Article

A cord is a constant-section seal: round, square, rectangular, or an extruded profile. It is glued or joined into a ring and seated in a lid, hatch, exchanger or chamber door.

Round section: diameter must compress in the groove by a set percentage. Too thick and the lid will not close; too thin and it will not seal.

Hardness: hand-clamped lids often Shore A 40–60; vibration and pressure need higher. Soft silicone suits food hatches, not oil.

Weather and water — EPDM. Food and wide temperature — silicone. Oil — NBR cord, not EPDM. Wrong medium is why a cord swells in a week.

The joint is the weak point on a continuous oil ring if the adhesive is guessed.

A lip or hollow bulb is an extrusion, not a round cord. Order it from a short sample or a section drawing.

We supply by the metre and as rings. After approval, cutting and joining is typically 3–5 business days.
