Oil seal size: what the three numbers mean

Article

An oil seal is selected by three sizes: shaft diameter, housing-bore diameter and width. A notation such as 35×48×10 describes the part geometry, not a catalogue number.

The first number is the shaft, where the lip sits. The second is the outside diameter, where the seal enters the housing. The third is the width along the shaft. Swap the first two and the seal will not fit.

A rotating shaft needs more than dimensions. We also need the lip direction, whether a dust lip is required, speed and shaft condition. An axial score cuts the lip quickly, so replacing one seal without checking the surface often does not stop the leak.

For engine, gearbox and pump oil up to +120 °C, NBR is recommended. For hot oil and fuel — FKM. For water and an outer lip left in the sun — EPDM: NBR cracks in ozone.

Send the old seal with the sizes. A worn lip no longer matches the shaft, and a caliper on the rubber lies. We measure the metal shaft and the housing bore.

A dust boot and an oil seal are different parts. A boot keeps dirt out and does not hold oil pressure. An oil seal holds oil and has a garter spring.
