Grade follows medium, temperature, pressure and motion. Datasheet ranges are a guide, not a permit for your joint.
Mineral oil, fuel and hydraulics up to about +100…+120 °C — NBR. Hotter or aggressive additives — FKM/Viton. EPDM is generally not used in mineral oil.
Water, steam, ozone, weather, mild alkalis — EPDM. Superheated steam must be checked on the actual sheet, not the word “EPDM”.
Acids, solvents, hot hydrocarbons — FKM/Viton. Higher price is for life, not branding.
Food and wide temperature windows — silicone. Silicone is not an oil seal. Food contact needs agreed compound and batch documents.
Abrasion and impact on mining joints — polyurethane, not a substitute for an NBR spool seal.
Shore A sits on top of the polymer: NBR 50 and NBR 90 behave differently in a groove.
Mixed duties (oil + water, CIP + steam) should be stated together. Sometimes two seals are cleaner than one compromise.
