EPDM seals: where they belong and where they do not

Article

A seal is a profile or cord compressed between two surfaces. It is used on gates, windows, panels and covers; it is not a rotating-shaft oil seal.

EPDM is recommended for water, steam, mild alkali, facades and outdoors, about −40…+150 °C. It holds ozone and sun. It is not recommended for oil, fuel or hydraulics: oil swells it. Use NBR, or FKM if the joint is hot.

A profile cannot be selected from its outside size alone. The groove needs room for designed compression: a cord that is too thick stops a lid closing, one that is too thin leaves a gap. A pressure flange and a gate rebate need different hardness.

Give the section as width and height, or send a piece of the old seal. A gate lip is usually softer than a gasket under pressure. A soft profile extrudes on a flange; a hard one will not close a door gap.

A ring joint is better vulcanized than glued. Glue lets go in water and sun. A closed loop needs the perimeter and whether the corner is square.

This is not a turnkey window install and not a large molded part. We make the profile, cord and flat seal to sample in Tashkent. After approval, usually 3–5 business days. +998 90 944 99 40.
